Charlottetown - Hockey PEI is pleased to announce that two PEI on-ice officials have been rewarded with National and International Assignments. These selections are made annually by Hockey Canada.
Mary McKinnon on Summerside has been assigned as a Referee for the 2012 National Women’s Under 18 Championships in Dawson Creek, British Columbia from November 7-11. This Championship consists of the best Under 18 female players in the country comprising of eight Regional teams, including Team Atlantic. McKinnon who was a prominent player in the female game including time at Niagara University in the US, has jumped into the officiating ranks and has made great strides in recent years. McKinnon is a level 4 official with the Hockey Canada Officiating Program whom worked as a linesman at the 2012 Esso Cup National Midget Female Championships in Charlottetown.
For Tim Hamel of Cornwall, he will not have to venture far for his International Assignment as a Referee. Hamel will be attending the 2012 World Junior “A” Challenge in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia from November 5-11. This tournament consist of the best Junior “A” players in the world including Canada Team East and Team West along with teams representing USA, Russia, Switzerland and the Czech Republic. Hamel a Level 6 official with the Hockey Canada Officiating Program and current member of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League officiating staff will be join by five referees and six linesmen’s at the championships.
“Each season, it is our goal to have officials be assigned to these types of National and International Championships”, stated Hockey PEI Referee-in-chief Troy Howatt. “Such assignments are a great motivator for the provincial officiating program and an opportunity to reward officials for their hard work and success. We are pleased to have Mary and Tim selected for these Championships”.
