The Aaron Coffin Official of the Year Award is presented in memory of Aaron who was a dedicated branch official who shared a passion for the game with his fellow officials. On April 2, 2014, the PEI hockey community suffered a great loss with the sudden passing of Aaron Coffin while officiating game 2 of the Island Junior Hockey League Championship series in Montague.

This award is presented to an individual who has been involved as an active official and/or served in an administrative role with Hockey PEI. The individual must exemplify the standards of both Hockey Canada and Hockey PEI Rules and Regulations. This individual must have also contributed to the game of hockey in ways other than the on-ice requirements and someone who combines leadership and ability both on and off the ice. The ideal candidate should have experience giving back to the officiating program as an instructor, supervisor or mentor.

In 2020, Lorenz Sanders became Referee in Chief for Hockey PEI’s largest association, Pownal Minor Hockey. This was no easy undertaking and is a task that requires a lot of time and dedication and is often thankless when it comes to the volunteer work he provides and the challenges he has to face during a season.

Sanders began his officiating career back in 2012 in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, NL. From there he moved to PEI and began working his way through the minor hockey system in Pownal where was named PMHA Official of the Year for the 2017-18 season. He would then go onto join Hockey PEI’s senior branch officials team and was named most improved official in 2018-19. Sanders can be found working lines for the Maritime Hockey League and below while also wearing the bands as referee for leagues such as the PEI Junior “C”, U18 AAA and U15 Major “AAA” amongst many others.

Sanders, a level 3 official, acts as a role model and support person for all PMHA officials during a season and is dedicated to his own officiating, putting his best effort forward whether it be in the minor hockey system or travelling the island for branch assignments.

Hockey PEI is proud to present Lorenz Sanders with this year’s Aaron Coffin Official of the Year Award.
