CHARLOTTETOWN, PE – The NHL/NHLPA First Shift Program has returned to Prince Edward Island for another season. Hockey PEI is proud to announce that 3 locations across PEI – Summerside, Charlottetown, and Montague, were all approved to host a program in their respective areas during the months of February and March 2021 which will include a Welcome Event and 6 on-ice sessions to follow. A total of 120 combined participants will take part in this season’s First Shift Programs across PEI.

“Welcome Events” are starting to take place for the 3 program locations, including this past week in Charlottetown where members from the Hockey PEI team fitted 30 girls with new gear from Bauer for the “All-Girls” program offered at the Charlottetown program location. Additionally, the Summerside location will also host an “All-Girls” program with the welcome event taking place this Sunday, January 17th!

The NHL/NHLPA FIRST SHIFT program is designed to ensure a positive experience for new-to-hockey families. The program wants families to experience the game at its best — to understand why so many Canadians feel an inherent love for the sport, and to stimulate a desire for continued participation. First Shift wants to take away any intimidation as it relates to equipment requirements, and/or rules of the game, remove potential safety concerns, and most importantly, provide an experience that is memorable and fun.

The goal of the program is to believe in all hockey has to offer kids, their families, and our communities. The First Shift Program is designed by the NHL/NHLPA to facilitate entry into hockey by offering a program that is ACCESSIBLE, AFFORDABLE, SAFE, and most importantly, FUN!

Hockey PEI looks forward to welcoming all new members to the rink next month at our 3 PEI program locations and wishes program organizers much success!
