CHARLOTTETOWN, PE – Four Islanders have gotten the call for an opportunity not easy to come by. NHL Rookie Camp invitations have gone out to Zach Bigger (Portage, PE / Acadie-Bathurst Titan, QMJHL), Thomas Casey (Charlottetown, PE / UNB Reds, AUS), Charlie Desroches (Days Corner / Saint John Sea Dogs, QMJHL) and Bennett MacArthur (Summerside, PE / Acadie-Bathurst Titan, QMJHL) over the weekend.
Zach Biggar will be headed to New Jersey to take part in the Devils Rookie Camp. The 18-year-old defenceman suited up for 33 games last season in the QMJHL’s COVID-19 season and would record 11 total points. A Hockey PEI High Performance Program alumni, Biggar was named to the 2019 Canada Winter Games team, attended the U16 QMJHL Gatorade Challenge and was also selected to Hockey PEI’s Atlantic Challenge Cup teams. Biggar played his Major U15 AAA career with the Prince County Warriors before moving up to the Kensington Wild of the NBPEIMU18 Hockey League. He saw the ice for 47 Maritime Hockey League games with the Summerside Western Capitals and recording 42 points before making the jump to major junior.
Thomas Casey comes off an impressive career-high season with 74 points recorded in 38 QMJHL games. The Charlottetown native who recently committed to the University of New Brunswick Reds Hockey Program will attend his second NHL camp with the Buffalo Sabres. In 2019, Casey attend Detroit’s NHL Rookie Camp. The left-handed forward played the first year of his U15 AAA hockey eligibility with the Charlottetown Abbies before making the switch to the Notre Dame Hounds in Saskatchewan. Casey would remain with the Hounds for the rest of his U15 and U18 playing years but would return to PEI to suit up for the Charlottetown Islanders in 2017. The hometown boy for 4 seasons with the Islanders was also a Hockey PEI High Performance Program member having played on the 2015 Canada Winter Games team, competing at the U16 QMJHL Gatorade Challenge and competing at the Atlantic Challenge Cup three times, once as an underage player.
Charlie DesRoches will join Casey in Buffalo after receiving the Sabres rookie Camp invitation. The 19-year-old defenceman has been with the Sea Dogs of the QMJHL for the past 3 seasons. He just came off a 26 point season in 32 games. DesRoches suited up for the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge with Team Canada in 2018-19 and also attended the U17 Development Camp prior to his selection. The Hockey PEI High Performance Program alumni competed at all provincial team events including the Atlantic Challenge Cup and the U16 QMJHL Gatorade Challenge. The Days Corner native played his Major U15 AAA career in Prince County with the Warriors before joining the Kensington Wild of the NBPEIMU18 Hockey League. In the 2017-18 season, DesRoches made the move across the border to suit up for the South Kent School Selects Hockey Academy.
Bennett MacArthur is headed to Arizona after receiving an invite to the Coyotes rookie camp. The Summerside native tallied 40 points in 33 games with the Titan in the QMJHL this season. This was MacArthur’s first full season with the team after splitting the 2019-20 season in the MHL with the Summerside Western Capitals and the Titans for the second half. The 20-year-old left-handed forward was also a part of Hockey PEI’s High Performance Program, having suited up for Team PEI at the Atlantic Challenge Cup for his U14 and U15 years along with competing at the U16 QMJHL Gatorade Challenge. MacArthur played his Major U15 AAA career with the Prince County Warriors in O’Leary before making the jump to the NBPEIMU18 Hockey League with the Kensington Wild in 2016-17. He would then change paths and attend Rothesay Netherwood School for the 2017-18 season before coming back to the Wild in 2018-29 and recording 35 points in only 26 games played.
