The first round of the 2021 QMJHL Virtual Draft took place Friday night. A total of 20 selections were made within the first round, with Charlottetown’s Luke Coughlin being the sole Islander selected.

Coughlin, who suited up as a defenceman for the Charlottetown Bulk Carrier Knights of the NB/PEI-U18 Major Hockey League this past season entered the draft with a ranking of sixth overall by the final QMJHL central scouting list. He would jump two spots following his selection by the Rimouski Oceanic which came 4th overall Friday night.

The 2005 born left shooting blue liner would record 15 points in 12 games played in the NB/PEI U18 Major Hockey League this season with the Knights (Not counting games versus the Mount Academy). He weighs in at 171 pounds and reaches a height of 5’09”.

Friday’s Draft was the first time since 2008 that players from the Maritimes have gone in the top-5 of the QMJHL Draft. (2- Tyler Peddle, NS // 4- Luke Coughlin, PEI // 5- Dylan MacKinnon, NB). Islanders should remember that 2008 draft year, as Murray River’s Brandon Gormley was selected 1st overall by the Moncton Wildcats. More recently, Summerside’s Noah Dobson was selected 6th overall in the 2016 QMJHL Draft by the Acadie-Bathurst Titan.

Rounds 2 to 14 will take place tomorrow, Saturday beginning at 10:00 am Atlantic Time. To stay up to date with live draft selections, you can visit: or follow along throughout the day on Hockey PEI social media channels on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram @HockeyPEI.
