This award is presented to Hockey PEI’s top coach who shows leadership to players, demonstrates skill development, fair play and has a sound philosophy for the game of hockey.  Winning may be considered an asset for this award, but it is certainly not the only and most important one.

Charlottetown, PE – This year’s Coach of the Year award is presented to Billy McGuigan, head coach of the MHL’s Summerside Western Capitals.

The individual who nominated Billy McGuigan had this to say:

“Coach McGuigan is a rarity in the world of sport, a professional player turned coach who not only inspires the players that report to him, but also sets an example for the entire community. Using his craft (hockey) Billy McGuigan has proven not only his ability to win, but also to create a strong sense of pride that binds the City of Summerside together. Billy’s unparalleled work ethic coupled with his passion for the game of hockey has proven itself in the many records he has set as a coach and the many examples of community engagement and pride he has established in Summerside and Prince County.

You quickly see his players rally around him, feed off his energy, and admirably look up to him as not only a coach, but also a role model and mentor. He finds a way to build personal relationships with players, gain their trust, and then the coaching flows naturally.”

In 2019, Billy McGuigan entered his 8th season as the Caps’ Head Coach. Before the season started, he was the winningest coach in Summerside Western Capitals 41-year history. After being recently named the recipient of the 2019-20 Darcy Haugan/Mark Cross Memorial Award as CJHL Coach of the Year, presented by the NHL Coaches’ Association, Billy led the Western Capitals to an outstanding 42-7-1-2 season.

One component to Billy that many may not know is the level of importance and dedication he puts towards the community and giving back. Whether that be volunteering in schools, attending special events, working with charitable organizations, or simply engaging with fans, he is truly a community champion when it comes to giving back. In turn, this is not only valuable to the community but helps the players to build character and become better people.

Hockey PEI is proud to present Billy McGuigan with Coach of the Year.
