CHARLOTTETOWN – Hockey PEI officials Ellen Dixon and Alex Dillon have been selected by Hockey Canada for assignments at the upcoming 2019 Canada Winter Games being held in Red Deer, Alberta.

“We are extremely proud of both Ellen and Alex on being selected as officials for the Canada Winter Games.  They are both outstanding individuals who bring great expertise and professionalism to the ice.“ said Paul Matte, Hockey PEI Manager of Officiating. “This will be an amazing experience for them both.”

Ellen Dixon was playing Bantam hockey in 2004 when she decided to enter the world of officiating.  She began refereeing with North River Minor Hockey and continued to do so while studying at Dalhousie University until 2015 when she then returned home and worked towards obtaining her level 4.  This level presented opportunities to work higher level games particularly the Women’s AUS and the Midget and Bantam AAA Female Atlantic Championships as both a linesman and a referee. Most recently Ellen was selected as a referee for the 2017 U-18 Women’s National Championship in Quebec City. “This was an amazing opportunity to work with top female officials from across the country, see top level female players, and receive invaluable supervisions and feedback from experienced officials.” said Ellen.

This winter Ellen was informed that she had been selected to referee at the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, Alberta. “It is an honor to have been selected to work at such an elite tournament. I am very much looking forward to having the opportunity to skate this tournament, meet fellow officials, and continue to develop with the supervisions that will be provided. I can’t encourage other female officials enough to continue with the game and always strive to improve. The opportunities are broad and endless for female officials!”

In 2011, during his second year playing Peewee AAA with Sherwood-Parkdale Rural Minor Hockey, Alex Dillon attended his first referee clinic.  It quickly became something he enjoyed and was proficient at.  Alex obtained his Level 4 in 2018 and has officiated in the Major Midget, Junior A, and Men’s AUS leagues.  He has been selected for prestigious assignments at the 2015-16 Atlantic Challenge Cup in Moncton, NB, the National OPOE 2017 in Calgary, AB, and the 2017-18 World Sledge Hockey Challenge held in Charlottetown, PE. When asked what it means to be selected for the 2019 Canada Winter Games Alex had this to say. “I am honored and proud to have been selected to represent Hockey PEI as an official at the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer Alberta. Officiating is a passion and I am grateful for the opportunity to perform at this level, learn from those around me, and take part in the excitement of the games. I’m extremely thankful to Hockey Canada for this opportunity and am beyond excited for the event.”

“It’s incredible to have Island talent selected amongst the country’s best officials and this is certainly an impressive step for both Ellen and Alex in their officiating careers. Hockey PEI congratulates them both on their selection and look forward to their continued success.” Geoff Kowalski, Executive Director.

Alex departs for the games on February 16th and Ellen departs February 23rd.
