The Island Junior Hockey League (IJHL) has recently announced the appointment of Steve Green as the league’s new commissioner.  Green replaces Jim Chandler who lead the league as commissioner for several years.

The four team Junior B league includes the Western Red Wings, Kensington Vipers, Sherwood Metros and Eastern Maniacs.

Green who resides in Borden-Carleton played junior hockey in Halifax and tallied with the Kensington Granites in the former PEI senior league.  When not playing he remained involved in hockey as a Level 5 Hockey PEI Referee and was a member of the Officials Council for eight years where he served as vice chairman for six.  Green also has extensive experience as a supervisor of officials, a role he currently maintains with the branch.

“I am looking forward to creating more exposure for the league and its players in the future” stated Green.  “We have a great product and offer a great opportunity for young players to play junior hockey in the province”.

This year the teams have organized a league fundraiser – $8,000.00 cash giveaway draw which is to be held on December 21, 2016.  Ticket sales can be purchased through each team.   This fundraiser helps support the teams to function throughout the season and assists with incurred costs of running a junior hockey club.

Kensington Vipers

The Vipers return as seven time defending champions and all teams will be gunning for them.  Wade Waddell and Trent Leard return to the bench as coaches.  The team will be led by key players captain Jordan Mayhew and two-time Don Johnson Cup all-star defenseman Ryan Murray.  Key additions to the team include rookies Logan Vandervelden, Riley Gallant as well as Colton Collins from NFLD.  Goaltender Grant Grady returns to patrol the goal crease for the Vipers in his final year of eligibility.

The Vipers home games are schedule for Sunday evenings at 7 pm at Community Gardens in Kensington.

Western Red Wings

The Red Wings made big strides last year as a contender and were one win away from claiming their first Island Junior title so are looking to take that extra step this season.   J.C. Gallant returns to handle the GM duties while Nathan Desroches returns to look after the duties behind the bench.

Key returning players are new captain Chasse Gallant, Jason Gallant, Abel Arsenault, Willie Gaudet, and newly acquired Patrick Cummiskey.  The back end is led by Calvin Macrae and rookie Lucas Beaulieu who was a stalwart with the Kensington Wild the last few seasons and has potential to be a top player in the junior ranks. The net will be guarded by returning goaltender Bradley Shea and 17-year-old Bronson Banks who shows signs early on that he belongs in this league.

The Red Wings home games are scheduled for Sunday nights at 7 pm at the Evangeline Rec Center.

Sherwood Metros

The Metros are looking forward to the 2016-2017 season and feeling confident in the depth and experience the team has to offer.  Dale Holmes is the man behind the scenes with the club controlling the managing duties while former Sherwood captains Alex Smith, Brandon Birt, and Harrison Wood will be handling the bench duties for the season.

Veteran goaltender Sam Walsh will see his fair share of ice-time this year and will be counted upon to backstop the Metros.   On defence over-age players Tyson Blue and Kyle Keoughan will lead a list of young skilled players, including second year defenseman Zack Ladner who had an excellent rookie season.  Up front Connor Smith and Lucas Holmes will be counted on to carry much of the load as well as two way forwards Cody MacPhee and Patrick MacGuigan will be relied on for their hard work and commitment for the Metros season to be a success.

The Metros home games are schedule for Wednesday nights at 8pm at Cody Banks Arena in Sherwood.

Eastern Maniacs

The Eastern Maniacs will have a new look this season as they have relocated to Souris for the 2016-2017 season.  Mark Baker and Leigh Jenkins will be looking after the managing duties while Mike McTague will be handling the bench duties for the team.

The Maniacs will be looking for overage players Matt Cox, Mark Burke, Damon MacDonald and Dalton MacDonald to lead the charge as well as hard nose forward Alex Gallant and always reliable Logan Toole to be at their best if they are to contend for the title.  Jordan Zember and Cam Duffy will be patrolling the nets for the Maniacs.

Maniacs home games are scheduled for Sundays in Souris at 8 pm with a few alternate dates mixed in.
