HOCKEY PEI ANNOUNCES FEMALE HOCKEY PLAN
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 2ND, 2021
A PLAN TO SUPPORT FEMALE HOCKEY ON PEI
CHARLOTTETOWN, PE – In 2020, Hockey PEI assembled a committee of champions of female hockey from across Prince Edward Island to conduct a Review of Female Hockey. This review included completing an environmental scan of what other provinces were doing, holding public consultations in February of 2020, conducting player consultations at the U15 and U18 levels and doing a complete review of data in terms of the current status of female hockey, its trends and anticipated growth.
The objective of the review was to gather input and ideas on how to grow the game of hockey for females on PEI. The Review of Female Hockey has since been completed and is now moving forward with the implementation of the recommendations over the next 3 years.
The committee has taken its recommendations and organized them into four areas of focus: Recruitment, Development, Promotion and Structure.
For recruitment, the goal is simple: To increase the number of females playing hockey in addition to providing a great experience for players. Some ways of doing that will be to offer island-wide Esso Fun Days at season start-up, host all-female First Shift Programs across PEI and implement all-female jamborees for the U7 and U9 divisions.
Furthermore, one of the most important pieces to the areas of focus recommended by the committee is development. The strategy for Hockey PEI will be to organize and encourage skill development at all levels of play and provide development opportunities for female coaches. The idea would be to provide female development opportunities for U7 right through to U18. This would include providing both player and coach development, with a focus on the U15 AAA and U18 AAA leagues, encourage AAA teams to host spring evaluation camps and aim at joining the U18 AAA Maritime U18 Female League with 2 – 3 teams. Throughout the rollout of development, Hockey PEI’s goal would also be to ensure each female team has at least one female coach.
Likewise, promotion is also going to be a key element to the success of Hockey PEI’s Female Plan. Hockey PEI wants to consistently promote female players and events and increase the profile of female hockey. Some initial areas of focus will be to increase the profile of our U15 AAA and U18 AAA female leagues with a custom league website and increased recognition opportunities. Of course, consistently promoting female participants and their events can be done in many ways and will continue to expand as the plan reaches its new heights and goals.
The final piece to Hockey PEI’s Female Plan is its restructuring. The new Structure for female hockey programming will implement the opportunities of fostering, promoting, developing, supervising and regulating all amateur female hockey on PEI. Hockey PEI will accomplish that by doing the following:
- Add a representative for female hockey to Hockey PEI Board and Development Council to facilitate the implementation of the Female Hockey Plan, including establishing the proposed structure below.
- Review and set boundaries for zones
- Central Registry: All females who wish to play female hockey will eventually register through the new online Central Registry which is being developed by Hockey Canada with an expected launch phase of TBA. This will ensure players are organized into teams and on the ice earlier.
- Establish best practices and resources to ensure consistent programming between zones (ie. hiring coaches, coordinating tryouts, budgets, mechanisms for feedback)
The proposed structure would be as followed:
- Female Council (FC)
- Draft regulations/bylaws for FC
- Establish FC
- Establish roles and responsibilities of Zone Directors
- Executive Committee (EC)
- Layout EC best practices
- Select EC Chairs
- Establish roles and responsibilities of the EC
- Establish Female Minor Hockey Associations that will work in collaboration with the EC‘s
The status of Hockey PEI’s female plan remains on-going. Many implementations of the initiatives outlined in the plan are already underway and additional information regarding specific initiatives will be communicated to Hockey PEI’s members and associations when able to do so.
