CHARLOTTETOWN, PE – The National Hockey League’s Tampa Bay Lightning announced today the signing of 20-year old Summerside, PEI native, Bennett MacArthur to a 3-year entry-level contract.

MacArthur,  a left-wing shooting power forward is currently playing in his second full season with the Acadie Bathurst Titan of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). This comes after he split the 2019-20 season with the Summerside Western Capitals of the Maritime Junior Hockey League (MHL) before joining the Titan for the second half of that season.

“It’s truly an honour and I’m so grateful to sign with such an outstanding organization like Tampa”

– Bennett MacArthur

Son of Adam and Lindsay MacArthur, the Prince Edward Islander has had quite the journey to bring him to today’s National League deal. Having played his U15 AAA Major days with the Prince County Warriors in O’Leary, PE, he would go on to record 71 points in his 2nd year with the team earning him 5 league awards including MVP, Top Forward, Most Points, Most Goals and named to first All-Star Team. His Warriors squad would go on to win back to back Island championships during his two years with the team.

From there, MacArthur would split his U18 Career between the New Brunswick / PEI Major U18 Hockey League’s Kensington Wild and the Rothesay Netherwood Prep School. These years did not come without struggle in his game, as MacArthur experienced ups and downs with his game overall and consistent scoring ability. He would ultimately go undrafted in the QMJHL. However, his persistence and work ethic lead him to a successful junior career to follow with his never quit mentality.

The Acadie Bathurst assistant captain has put up a total of 95 points in his 2 and half years with the club including an impressive season to date having recorded 25 goals and 18 assists for a total of 43 points in just 26 games played this year.

MacArthur is also an alumni of Hockey PEI’s High Performance Program having competed for Team PEI at the Atlantic Challenge Cup during his Under-14 and Under-15 tenures along with suiting up at the QMJHL’s Under-16 Gatorade Challenge in 2017.

The Tampa Bay Lightning are coming off back-to-back Stanley Cup victories, and currently sit at the top of the Atlantic Division, to which MacArthur says he looks forward to joining such a successful powerhouse organization.

From all of us here at Hockey PEI, we want to congratulate Bennett and his family on this amazing accomplishment and wish him all the best in what we trust will be an exciting and great hockey career.
