Recognized for Outstanding contribution to female hockey

Nancy MacMillan of O’Leary was recently honored by Hockey Canada at their annual Awards Banquet on Friday in St. John’s Newfoundland and Labrador.

MacMillan a longtime volunteer in the game was awarded the Female Breakthrough Award.

The Female Breakthrough Award is presented annually to recognize an individual for their outstanding leadership and contribution to the advancement of female hockey in Canada.  Past winners of the award from PEI include Dawn Moase (2008) and Susan Dalziel (2000).

MacMillan has represented PEI on the national stage as a player, coach and administrator, from the national women’s championship to the Canada Winter Games and Team Canada camps.

MacMillan laced up her skates with the women’s hockey team at the University of P.E.I. in 1976.  When her playing days were done Nancy went into coaching, working with several teams throughout the province at all levels of the game. She was part of the staff at Atlantic Challenge Cups, Team Atlantic, National Women’s Under-18 Championships and Canada Winter Games, sharing her experience with hundreds of players.

She joined the Hockey PEI Development Council in 1999 and would lead the council as chair in 2007, eventually spending many years helping shape the game on the island. She made a significant contribution to provincial programming and was a tremendous contributor to the national scene, working to champion the development of female hockey from the grassroots to the elite level, and quickly becoming one of the faces of female hockey on PEI.

Nancy worked hard to advocate on behalf of players and coaches from PEI and introduce them to the nation, joining the mission staff for the Canada Winter Games, most recently in 2015, and also welcome the nation to PEI, serving on the host committee for Atlantic championships and the Esso Women’s Nationals.

Most recently MacMillan has shifted her focus back to her hometown of O’Leary and works with the Initiation Program in her home association.  A program in which she had been a strong advocate for over the years.

Nancy has never failed to give her time to a cause in the game, be it on the ice, behind the bench or in the boardroom, and her selflessness has made her a role model for so many of those she has come in contact with through the years.

Hockey PEI and its members extend a huge congratulations to Nancy MacMillan as this year recipient of the Hockey Canada Female Breakthrough Award.
