Truro, N.S. (April 21, 2021) – The Maritime Junior Hockey League (MHL) is pleased to announce Grand Falls Rapids Head Coach Brad MacKenzie and Campbellton Tigers Head Coach Sandy McCarthy as co-recipients of the 2020-21 Coach of the Year Award. The pair tied in the voting, which was held amongst the league’s twelve teams. Like many of their colleagues, the two men faced a tough task in 2020-21 due to various COVID-19 restrictions which left their teams unable to play or even practice for extended periods of time.

Brad MacKenzie has spent two seasons behind the bench in Grand Falls. After a rebuilding year in 2019-20, where the team finished 16-30-3-3, the Rapids finished the 2020-21 regular season atop the Eastlink North standings at 12-5-2-4.

Ironically, the man who preceded MacKenzie in Grand Falls shares the 2020-21 Coach of the Year award with him. Sandy McCarthy joined the Tigers coaching staff in 2019-20 as an Assistant Coach and took over as Head Coach this past season. The team finished in third place by points percentage at .574 in the Eastlink North with a record of 15-11-0-1.
