The Aaron Coffin Official of the Year Award is presented in memory of Aaron who was a dedicated branch official who shared a passion for the game with his fellow officials.  On April 2, 2014, the PEI hockey community suffered a great loss with the sudden passing of Aaron Coffin while officiating game 2 of the Island Junior Hockey League Championship series in Montague.

This award is presented to an individual who has been involved as an active official and/or served in an administrative role with Hockey PEI. The individual must exemplify the standards of both Hockey Canada and Hockey PEI Rules and Regulations.  This individual must have also contributed to the game of hockey in ways other than the on-ice requirements and someone who combines leadership and ability both on and off the ice.  The ideal candidate should have experience giving back to the officiating program as an instructor, supervisor, or mentor.

Charlottetown, PE – This year’s award is presented to Nolan Cornish, who serves as MHA Senior Liaison on Hockey PEI’s Officiating Committee. Nolan’s officiating history is nothing short of impressive. Nolan started when he was just 14 years old, officiating minor hockey in O’Leary and West Prince. He takes his role very seriously, being nominated as Most Promising Official in 2010-2011 and Most Dedicated Official in 2011-2012.

Over the course of his career, Nolan has had many opportunities to officiate many larger-scale events. He participated as a linesman in the 2013 Junior A Royal Bank Cup as well as the Men’s Canadian Interuniversity Sport Championships in 2015 and 2016.

Nolan can be described as a passionate and dedicated individual. He takes pride in his abilities as an official and as a mentor to the younger generation.  As a senior liaison, there is not a week that goes by that he is not on the phone or messaging with a fellow official problem solving, mentoring, or just being a sounding board for any issue that they may have.

Nolan officiated with the QMJHL from 2015-2019 and currently officiates for the AUS, Junior leagues, Major Midget, and Midget AAA.

Nolan enjoys supervising and acting as a mentor for young officials. He realizes the importance of their development and loves to be a role model because that is what provided him with a positive experience as he was moving up through the official ranks.

Nolan is respected on and off the ice and well known for being a truly fair official, and Hockey PEI is proud to announce that Nolan is this year’s Aaron Coffin Official of the Year.
