TEAM OF THE YEAR AWARD WINNER – Western Regals U18 “AAA” Male Team

This award is presented annually to a member team of Hockey PEI at any level. Although team success is a considering factor for this award, it is not merely based on wins, losses and championships. Teams considered for this award should have demonstrated other qualities such as team sportsmanship and fair play.

The Western Regals U18 “AAA” Male hockey team came together in a season where they needed to the most. Not only was the COVID-19 season challenging to navigate through, but the team had experienced something even more devastating. The loss of two teammates to a terrible boating accident on September 16th, 2020. Ethan Reilly and Alex Hutchinson lost their lives at sea while third-year regals player, Max MacIssac survived the incident.

This news came as a shock to the players, coaches and management, but the team rallied together, displayed resilience and a purpose that is being recognized and celebrated today. A season they will forever remember.

A community and a province came together to support the families involved with this tragedy and slowly but surely the team was able to overcome this loss and begin working to win a championship for their lost brothers. Through grief, they pushed forward with an understandable slow start to the season, with struggle on and off the ice but supported one another throughout it all. Hockey became an escape for them and allowed a safe place to come together and play for both Ethan and Alex.

By Christmas time, the Western Regals were starting to climb in the standings and by the time the playoffs rolled around, they were one; one team, one goal. They got past a tough Pownal Red Devils team in five games before sweeping the Central Attack to win the provincial title. Tears of happiness, accomplishment, and remembrance flowed from the Western Regals team and their followers. Immediately, sweaters of their fallen teammates were brought onto the ice to share in the jubilation.

There is a Kenyan proverb that says “Sticks in a bundle are unbreakable.” The Western Regals lost two important sticks this past year, but the team dug in and persevered.

Hockey teaches us a lot of things, but above all, it teaches us the value of teamwork.

It is with great pride that Hockey PEI presents this year’s Team of the Year award to the Western Regals U18 “AAA” male team.
