Esso Cup takes place April 23-30 in Morden, Manitoba

The Mid Isle Wildcats are Esso Cup bound.

The Mid Isle Wildcats will carry the PEI flag and represent the Atlantic Region at the 2017 Esso Cup National Female Midget Championships in Morden, Manitoba from April 23 to 29.

The Wildcats rolled to first place in the PEI Midget Female League boasting a regular season record of 19-3-2 to finish first place.  The team had 106 Goals for and only 37 against.

They would stride into the Playoffs and defeat the Western Wind in three straight games in the league semi-finals.  They would then defeat a strong Kings County team 3-2 in the best of five Provincial Championships and capture the Dalziel Cup.

Next step was the Atlantic Championships in East Hants, NS.  After an opening round loss to the Nova Scotia reps Northern Subway Selects, the Mid Isle Wildcats rolled out four straight wins and defeated the same Northern Subway Selects 2-0 in the gold medal game to capture the Atlantic Championship and earn a berth in the Esso Cup.

During the Championships the team was led by the tournament-leading scorer Taylor Gillis who netted 12 points in 5 games and was also guided by the tournament top goaltender Maggie Johnston.

The team will open the Esso Cup tournament on Sunday versus the St. Albert Slash from the Pacific region.  The event consist of five regional champion teams and the host team Pembina Valley Hawks.

“The Esso Cup is the pinnacle of female minor hockey, it doesn’t get any bigger than this,” stated head coach Kevin Andrews.  “Obviously, the players are very excited, and a bit nervous. Our competition consists of teams and players from across Canada that we have not seen before so I think some of that nervousness comes from not being familiar with them.”

“This is a fantastic learning experience for our players, they get the opportunity to play against the best female hockey players in the country and see how they compare.”

The last PEI team to attend the Esso Cup National Championships was in 2011 when the Atlantic Region was represented by the Kings County Kings.

The following is the round robin schedule for the Mid Isle Wildcats.  All times Atlantic.

Sunday – 5:30 pm vs Pacific (St. Albert Slash)
Monday – 2:00 pm vs Quebec (Harfangs Du Triolet)
Tuesday – 2:00 pm vs West (Prince Albert Bears)
Wednesday – 5:30 pm vs Ontario (Durham West Lightning)
